Job Summary:

The Sheet Metal Mechanic is responsible for the fabrication, installation, modification, and repair of sheet metal components aboard vessels under construction, maintenance, or repair. This role requires knowledge of shipboard layouts, mechanical drawings, and the ability to work in tight spaces aboard ships or in fabrication shops.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Fabricate, cut, bend, and assemble sheet metal parts using tools such as shears, brakes, rolls, and hand tools.

  • Install HVAC ductwork, ventilation systems, bulkheads, lockers, cable trays, and other sheet metal structures.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications.

  • Perform fitting and welding tasks as required, including tack welding.

  • Use measurement and layout tools to ensure proper fit and alignment.

  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and shipyard regulations.

  • Perform quality checks on work to meet shipyard and naval standards.

  • Work independently or as part of a team on ships, in dry docks, or in shipyard workshops.

  • Communicate with supervisors and other trades to coordinate work.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED preferred. Technical training or trade school certification is a plus.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in sheet metal work, preferably in a marine or shipyard environment.

  • Skills:

    • Ability to read blueprints and work orders.

    • Strong understanding of metal fabrication and installation techniques.

    • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and metal forming machinery.

    • Basic welding and tack welding skills are a plus.

    • Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.

  • Physical Requirements:

    • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

    • Capable of standing, kneeling, and climbing for extended periods.

    • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
