Job Description

NAYA Family Center seeks an experienced development leader to be our first Chief Advancement Officer. NAYA is one of Portland, Oregon’s oldest and most respected nonprofits and is a model for urban Native-serving organizations across the country.

This is a senior leadership position with a broad range of responsibilities. The Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) is a member of the executive leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO, and leading a team of development and communications professionals.

NAYA has a large and engaged community with a history of successful event-based fundraising. Building on this foundation, the CAO will expand corporate and individual giving, increase major gifts and monthly donations, and establish a legacy giving program. The CAO will be provided with the necessary resources to develop a thriving development operation.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including free medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees (with affordable options for family coverage), a 401(k) retirement plan with a 6% match, paid vacation, and holidays. This is a hybrid role, working up to two days per week from home after onboarding.

Starting salary is commensurate with experience.

Who You Are

  • A fundraising professional with at least five years of development experience. CFRE certification is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with major gifts, legacy gifts, corporate giving, and foundation grants.
  • Ideally, three years of experience leading a team.
  • Experience or familiarity with Native communities. If not, a commitment to learning Native history and culture is required.
  • Experience with capital campaigns of $3 to $5 million is preferred.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills.
  • A strategic thinker capable of managing both big-picture planning and detailed event execution.

What You'll Do

  • Serve on the executive leadership team, providing organization-wide strategic leadership.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, CFO, and Board of Directors to develop and implement annual work plans and budgets aligned with NAYA’s strategic goals.
  • Lead the Board’s Fundraising Committee, engaging board members in donor cultivation and relationship building.
  • Provide leadership to a team of six communications and development staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability.
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to surpass a $2.5 million annual goal.
  • Expand corporate and individual giving, including major gifts, legacy gifts, and monthly donations.
  • Oversee the strategy and execution of key fundraising events, including the NAYA Gala and Many Nations Academy Student Showcase, engaging consultants as needed.
  • Oversee storytelling and content creation for external communications, including the website, social media, newsletters, videos, and print materials.
  • Act as NAYA’s primary media contact, managing press releases and interviews.
  • Coordinate communication strategies between the NAYA Action Fund (c4) and Family Center (c3).
