Position Summary
This Assistant District Attorney position is a full-time position to be filled in the District Attorney’s office for Fond du Lac County, located in Fond du Lac, WI. This is a State position in the unclassified service. This position will focus on general cases with the opportunity for specialization.
FOND DU LAC COUNTY BACKGROUND
Fond du Lac County is uniquely located within approximately 60 minutes of Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay, and about 2 hours from Chicago, depending on traffic. The City of Fond du Lac has a population of approximately 44,000 and the County population is over 100,000. Fond du Lac County has two smaller cities that are quiet and great places to raise a family, with strong school districts. The City of Ripon has a fantastic downtown with Ripon College and many great restaurants, with a brewery and a winery nearby. The City of Waupun makes Madison an easy drive and recently opened a brewery that has gotten great reviews.
Fond du Lac has many great trails for running, biking, or walking the dog, and sits on beautiful Lake Winnebago, the largest inland lake in Wisconsin. The county offers many other lakes, providing great opportunities to be on the water and recreation. In addition to the recreational opportunities in the county, the location makes recreational options outside the county easily drivable.
LOCAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM BACKGROUND
The county has five judges and court commissioners do not handle criminal cases. The office currently has 11 attorneys, with one attorney assigned to each branch and other attorneys that specialize in specific case types. The district attorney and deputy district have a combined 35+ years of experience. The office has many experienced attorneys, including four former district attorneys, and one former assistant attorney general in the office. This atmosphere provides new attorneys with excellent mentorship opportunities, the ability to grow, and handle complex cases. Previous attorneys in the office have gone on to become judges, district attorneys, corporation counsel, and to the Attorney General’s Office. This level of staffing also provides great opportunity for vacation and time off.
The proximity to larger counties, an interstate highway, and other major highways in the county causes this to be a busy office, leading to major cases, high level drug, sensitive crimes, and shootings. This provides a wide array of case types for attorneys to handle. The office prosecutes everything from cold cases homicides, racketeering, complex drug conspiracies, intentional homicide, gang related crime, sexual assault, drug overdose homicides, and everything in between.
PUBLIC SAFETY RELATIONSHIPS
We maintain excellent relationships with the public, the County Executive, County Board, and law enforcement agencies. Our primary referrals come from the Fond du Lac Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office. Our law enforcement agencies are modern, professional, and have excellent leadership, leading to quality investigations and strong results in the courtroom.
Salary Information
The starting salary for this position will be $76,378 annually ($36.72 per hour).
Job Details
Attorneys who are currently employed by the State of Wisconsin are invited to apply and may be able to transfer at their current pay rate. Attorneys who have left the position of Wisconsin elected District Attorney or Assistant District Attorney within the last five years may be able to be hired at a wage rate above the minimum.
Qualifications
Only attorneys who have been admitted to practice law in the State of Wisconsin may be hired.
